Weekend Listening: Ellie Holcomb - The Broken Beautiful

The first time I heard this song, I was not having the greatest of days. It really made me remember the things that I hold dear, and also that regardless of what I have done wrong, or the good that I have failed to do, I have someone to rely on and trust through everything.

I heard it again on Wednesday this week and I've had it in my head the last two days. So I had to play it to my husband on Youtube this weekend. Once again my spirit has been uplifted and now I am sharing it with you.

Weekend Listening: So 80's

I'm not sure if it was the old weather that made us a bit nostalgic or what? But my husband and I both had 80's songs going through our heads. Here are 3 of our favourites from this weekends choice:

Sweet Dreams by Eurythmics was actually released the year my husband was born.

Who doesn't love this song? It's terribly catchy. This is what I mean by 'ear-worm', sorry you won't get this one out of your head. (hehe)

We love Cyndi Lauper!

Weekend Listening: Bruno Mars sung by 12-year-old boy

This weekend, while I was in Durban, I was entertained by my host's 12 year old son who is taking singing lessons. The one song was 'Dancing in the Moonlight' by Toploader and the other two were by Bruno Mars. I wish I had recorded it, because he really is good! Anyway, since I did not listen to much other good music this weekend, I thought I would share what he sang. But it's amazing how our brains work, because it got to me thinking about other music as well. So I added links to those.

Firstly, 'When I was your man'

I really like Bruno Mars' style, voice and songs, but this video linked below is a little boring to be honest. Maybe it doesn't need a very exciting video because the words are so descriptive (in a good way) but I feel like they should just not have bothered.

He also sang 'Just the way you are'. This is a much more exciting video, and I must say the little guy did a great rendition of this song as well.

Every time I hear the name of this song it takes me a while to realise that it is not Billy Joel's 'Just the way you are' of which the original recording has the most famous Phil Woods playing the alto saxophone solo. So hear is a link to a live recording of Billy Joel in his early days.

And this leads me on to a more 'jazzy' version by Diana Krall, who is truly an amazing jazz singer and pianist and is definitely worth checking out if you have never heard of her.

Weekend Listening: Lorde - Royals (Because we can't get it out of our heads)

She is certainly different to most other teen sensations of this day, and although I'm not too sure what it is she stands for (calling herself 'Lorde') her music is interesting and well constructed. Especially for pop music. She has also won numerous awards already and she has not even been on the music scene for very long. This song is definitely an ear-worm kind of song.

Lorde

She smiles :-)

Weekend Listening: Heart - Barracuda

So this is what was playing on repeat in our house this weekend. And this song needs no introduction. It is so well written and performed. Oh to have been around in the late '70s.
ENJOY

Weekend Listening: Civil Twilight

Last night we watched Civil Twilight at the beautiful Kirstenbosch Gardens for the Old Mutual Summer Sunset Concert series. It is the second time I have seen them there. The first time was about 3 years ago, before they had their 4th band member. They have put a slightly different spin on some of the songs from their first two albums, and played a few that are going to be on their third. The founding members are brothers Andrew and Steven McKeller along with Richard Wouters. They have been living in the States for 10 years and it was 2 years ago that they welcomed there fourth member, Kevin Dailey. They are signed with Wind-up Records.

This is my husbands favourite song of theirs. The rhythm and bass are pretty cool.

The clouds kept coming and going
Despite how it looks, we had a great view!

Weekend Listening: Cher Lloyd

I really like Cher Lloyd. Why? Because she is so down to earth and doesn't take herself too seriously. She also comes across as intelligent when she is interviewed, perhaps wise beyond her years. I know that she is pop, but this song is seriously catchy and fun, and was playing full blast in our house yesterday!

Weekend Listening: The Cranberries

We love The Cranberries and since we did a fare bit of driving this weekend, we stuck an old CD in the car and it was amazing. I love Dolores O'Riordan's voice and their music is so unique and awesome.

Stu's favourite: Dreams

My favourite (although I'm not too sure about the video)
