Sorry, I write this post almost 2 weeks ago but did not post it because it wasn't finished. It still isn't, (gosh, I would make a terrible reporter) but I have decided to just put it out there anyway as the moment has pretty much gone for a proper review.
My husband was so excited at the idea of going to watch an opera. "I think it's actually a musical that is put on by Cape Town Opera Company", I told him. But for him knowing he was going to hear a different style of music other than jazz was thrilling. I was excited too as I had seen snip-bits of it on TCM as a child but I couldn't remember much. Either way, we were going with my family as it was my husband's birthday last week and it was a great excuse to go.
I'm still not sure what you classify Show Boat as, a musical opera? Not all of the singing was in operatic style, but a lot was and yet there was talking in between and much dancing, which is not usually found in an opera.
Either way, my husband was quite satisfied and said it was incredibly refreshing. Poor guy has been bombarded with jazz music since we started dating.
So how was the show? Well the costumes and stage were beautiful. The acting was really good, although American accents slipped a few times, and of course the singing was amazing...except that we couldn't always here what they were saying. I blame the sound engineer. I think that their diction was good. So that was the biggest problem for my family and I, we couldn't here everything they were saying or singing, especially the chorus parts.
